The Australian Federation of Travel Agents has thrown its weight firmly behind Tony Abbott in this weekend’s election after praising the Coalition’s pledge not to increase the Passenger Movement Charge in its first term of government.
AFTA chief executive Jayson Westbury said the Coalition will be a “government for tourism” should it win power on Saturday and accused Labor of treating the PMC as a “play thing”.
He described Kevin Rudd’s suggestion to index the PMC to inflation each year as “outrageous”.
“The PMC has been the current Government’s budget play thing and they have used it to top up consolidated revenue for years,” Westbury said. “It is an anti-tourism tax and the industry can now have a level of certainty about the applicable level for the next three years.”
