Whats in a name?

By Guy Besley, Latitude Travel Services,

In essence we are a marketing business, however we specialise in the tourism Niche; obviously. However my personal day to day activities are involved in many Niches of marketing, from Restaurants, Handymen, Animal shelters, Digital Media, florists, jewellers and the list goes on; about 50 in total. Oh, and competitors in tourism, although we don’t look at competitors as competitors, but stakeholders in the bigger picture!

I’m getting sidetracked, sorry. The topic above “whats in a name” is in relation to marketing, and the power of a simple few words that capture the potential “absorber of contents” eye. I am writing this brief little post to make a comment about one of our tourism blogs (not this one), 2 days ago I changed the name of the blog and set the URL back to a wordpress.com url (sorry to get a bit technical for those I have lost). That simple change in name of the site and a url that reflected the business name (not activity funnily enough) has attracted 16 subscribers alone in the last 24 hours.

My mobile keeps pinging with a new subscriber. OK, I know the power of marketing and the value of the right “catchy” phrases etc. but this really did catch me off guard as the name and the url aren’t that exciting and absolutely trivial to the content of the site. Goes against everything we believe in Google etc. So the moral of the story is a few words and good content attract viewers.

As an aside, the site in question has absolutely NO graphics, fancy photos or pretty formatting, just words! Content, that’s all.

Now to be fair, 16 subscribers is not much considering we have 10’s of thousands here, but in only 24 hours on a site that has been going for nearly 2 years with about 3 subscribers. Interesting stuff. Tourism is not dead after all. 🙂

Happy marketing.
